Calcutta Kids' Micro Health Insurance Scheme
logic model

  Problem statement Intervention

Low-income families living in slums in Howrah, India struggle to finance the monetary costs associated with being hospitalized. Common responses include  forgoing care, and borrowing from local moneylenders. A Calcutta Kids study revealed that the mean effective annual interest rate charged by these moneylenders is 70%.
Calcutta Kids will implement a micro-health insurance scheme in the slums where it already operates. A family insurance product will be offered, covering costs associated with inpatient care (hospital bills, drugs, diagnostic testing). At Rs. 60 per person ($1.33) the premium will be affordable and inclusive, while the coverage of Rs. 15,000 ($333) will enable financially safe access to quality health care.
